The Buckhorn Resort

Built in 1933 by Louie Cannon, the property opened as a general store and trading post. The famous old fireplace that warms the current bar and restaurant was built by an uncle of Mr. Verland (Benny) Benson, who was involved in the project as a rock hauler and mud mixer. The Buckhorn was sold in 1948 to Walter & Helen Hutchinson. Carroll (Carl) & Beth Beckwith bought the property in 1961. With the advent of the snowmobile in the early 60’s the Buckhorn became a year-round business and one of the best-known destinations for visitors to the UP. Dick & Lynn Beckwith bought the business from Dick’s mother Beth in 1983 and owned and operated the Resort through 2012, with many changes over the years including the addition of the motel (in the late 80’s), and for several years, the Otter Lake Campground. The Buckhorn Resort has earned national prominence within the snowmobile community earning several awards as the “Best Trailside Pitstop in North America” by SnowGoer Magazine. Ben & Karla Cooper along with their children, Nicole & Jon Pacl, Sharon & Brandon Hollingshead, Andy, and Rachel, took over operation of the Buckhorn Resort in the fall of 2012. We (the Coopers) moved to the Munising area from Whitewater, Wisconsin. Ben & Karla started their working years employed in the resort/campground industry and fell in love with the lifestyle. After nearly 10 years in the business, both Ben & Karla switched gears and took jobs as teachers, but never gave up on finding their own resort! They sought to find a property that was rich in tradition and that set a standard of quality and beauty. Enter the Buckhorn! The resort they found has been family-owned and operated for over 80 years and has a rich tradition of customer service and satisfaction.
